 Thousands of Gas Purification Systems are already in use in labs worldwide. We are featuring it this month to emphasize the importance of highly purified carrier gas, for optimum GC performance. Oxygen is the most common phase-degrading contaminant in both helium and hydrogen carrier gases. From our experience, most oxygen contamination in practical use comes from leaks in the carrier gas lines at fittings and at the regulator, rather than from gas inside the cylinder. For this reason it is important to have a purifier at the instrument, just upstream of the injection port. Oxygen-free carrier gas leads to longer column life, lower bleed and reduced tailing.

APPLICATIONS: The CRS system has the highest capacity of the GC cartridge-based purifiers.  It also has the highest quality in a replaceable-cartridge system at mid-level price. The all-welded stainless steel manifold is intrinsically leak-free. While it is designed for GC carrier gas use, it can be used in any application requiring high-purity inert gas flow at rates up to 5L per minute. Other applications in which it has been used include FTIR purge gas filtering, and specialized welding applications. (For flow rates over 1L per minute, special attention to depletion and provision of replacement cartridges should be considered.)

 .  The very high capacity of the CRS system means that the typical single-GC user will only change cartridges once each year, and the system has better over-all performance without the check valves.
